Takeaways from WordCamp US 2024

Another WordCamp US is in the books, and our Modern Tribe attendees left Portland with new insights into the future of WordPress, from AI applications to an evolving editorial experience and beyond. In this post, we’re sharing some of our team’s biggest takeaways from the event, delving into the trends and conversations that most captured our attention.

Decisions, not options

“People are pushing the boundaries of WordPress in innovative ways that haven’t been explored before. In many instances, we’re witnessing a growing integration of AI, not just for content generation but also for tasks like technical debugging, taxonomy registration, and managing admin configurations. Additionally, WordPress is increasingly being used as a self-contained JavaScript framework, decoupled from its traditional server-side platform. This shift opens up new possibilities for headless CMS, static site generation, and even native app development.

These groundbreaking applications make WordPress more versatile than ever. However, this growing flexibility also introduces more complexities for content creators, developers, and users. Decisions about which APIs to integrate, how the admin experience should function, how to shape the user journey, and the scalability and performance of the model all become crucial considerations.

From both an agency and client standpoint, the sheer range of options can be overwhelming. This makes it critical to approach decision-making with clear intention. Focusing on the user experience for all stakeholders—content creators, developers, and end users—requires a deliberate approach to defining goals, processes, and outcomes.

These changes significantly impact how we plan, build, design, and train. It’s essential to be clear and intentional about the problems we’re addressing, the choices we make, and their long-term effects on both user experience and technical debt, ensuring that decisions made today will positively shape the future for both admins and visitors.”

WordPress’ continued relevance & adaptability

“WordCamp US 2024 showcased WordPress’s evolution across multiple fronts, from advancements in the Gutenberg editor and AI integration to improved accessibility and scalability, which was highlighted in case studies from major publishers and organizations. The conference highlighted the platform’s growing capabilities in areas such as education, e-commerce, and content management, and also addressed crucial aspects of security, privacy, open-source development, the editor experience, and business growth strategies. These developments underscore WordPress’s continued relevance and adaptability in meeting diverse needs, from individual creators to large-scale enterprises, in an ever-changing digital landscape.”

The perfect framework for AI

“The AgentWP AI talk at WCUS highlighted how the well documented, robust API and easily parsable nature of WordPress makes it the perfect framework to integrate AI into to perform a plethora of actions. Developers can benefit from the ability to aggregate error logs and documentation to fix otherwise time consuming issues and customers can benefit from an AI assistant that is able to help them perform routine, everyday tasks.”

Relationships drive better work

“Modern Tribe is a special place that appeals to people who value living well and building lasting relationships just as much as they value doing great work. While it is absolutely true that I come away from WordCamp with new knowledge and insights, I also take away a renewed inspiration to do great work for my coworkers.

The brilliant talk on the WordPress Playground left me in awe and excited to begin experimenting more on my own. The thoughtful talks about customizing the editor experience and being sensitive to the needs of clients provided me with dense knowledge that will take time to unpack.

WordCamp also gave me the rare opportunity to enjoy the company of some of the amazing people I work with on a daily basis. We attended talks together, shared meals, discussed a myriad of topics and learned just a little more about what makes each of us who we are. Now a few days removed, more than anything, I am taking away deepened relationships with coworkers I am happy to call friends.”
